2007's FEAlliance Principals Awards for Excellence was presented to the Principal of Shropshire's Telford College, Doug Boynton OBE. The award is the latest in a string of educational accolades that reflect the immense success of Telford College.
Mr Boynton received the award in the form of an engraved glass plaque at the Higher Education Awards ceremony. The award was presented to him by Shropshire's Deputy Lieutenant and Telford College Chair of Governors, Mike Lowe CBE.
The coveted Principals Award for Excellence is hosted by the people at the very heart of Further Education. Nominations for the award came from colleagues within Further Education establishments right across the country.
Working to stringent criteria when selecting the award winner, the FEAlliance panel look for professionals dedicated to making a difference and shaping the future of FE. Mr. Boynton was selected as this year's winner based upon the volume of nominations from his colleagues, containing rich examples of his commitment to students, colleagues and Further Education.
In one statement written by a member of his staff Mr. Boynton was said to have "acheived an amazing amount during his time at Telford College and the achievement of the Five Outstanding Grade 1's should be the pinnacle of his career".
This comment referred to an amazing feat of accomplishment when, in June 2006, Telford College surpassed all national benchmarks by being awarded Five Grade One results in an OFSTED inspection report. In the report the College was said to be "Outstanding" in every aspect - an unprecedented achievement for a Further Education college of its size.
Commenting on the OFSTED report at the time, House of Lords' Chief Whip, Lord Bruce Grocott, said: "I have seen the college grow year after year in achievement and reputation. This report is splendid news for TCAT and for Telford."
Other tributes for Mr. Boynton contained in the submission statements for this year's Principals Awards for Excellence included:
"Drive, commitment and dedication leading to Outstanding OFSTED/ALI Inspection in every area. Knows and cares about staff, learners and wider community."
"Leading the college to achieve Grade 1 status."
"Has proved an outstanding leader of a now Grade 1 college. He constantly thanks, praises and rewards all staff and inspires continued quality improvements."
On hearing he was to be presented with the award Mr. Boynton said he was staggered. "it is my privilage to work in and lead one of the finest colleges in the country," he said, "one that has received many corporate national accolades."
" It is such a good college because of the quality, professionalism and dedication of all our staff to our students. That this award comes about because of testimonials written about me by my staff is both very humbling and really thrilling."
Mr. Boynton said he was delighted to accept the award on behalf of his staff and concluded by saying: "Without their support and the tremendous "family" team spirit the college would not be where it is now."
